Boomkat:

This newest edition on the assembled-by-hand Under The Spire imprint arrives from newcomer Tom White, whose only other release currently in circulation is a three-inch CD-r on the Smallfish label. These four tracks clock in at a nicely proportioned twenty-six minutes, and although there's nothing presented here that greatly expands the established idiom of microsound - expect gravelly textures, the rustling of twigs and ambiguous droning within the first few minutes - as a tantilising blast of fresh, abstract electronics this disc really scratches an itch. White's composition/production skills are head-turningly impressive throughout the terrific opener 'Nora Club', which really immerses you in the digitised thicket described above, though a slightly different, more rhythmic approach is taken on the title-track 'A Well-Known Phrase', whose whirring loops, snaking melodics and shadowy guitar tones offer a different kind of ambience. Drones and spacious metallic clangs plot out the skeletal 'Safety Poster', making for the most vaporous and intangible of all the pieces on offer here, while finally 'Top Floor' sets off feedback tones and scrambled blips that could have been plucked from a pulsar by a radio telescope. You know, or something to that effect. A very strong, very limited (just 100 copies) release once again from this great label.
