about

MEDINA VIBRATIONS is a collection of electroacoustic works from sound artist TOM WHITE. The material collected spans installation work, studio composition, and live recordings. Whirring stereo imaging and dense acousmatic soundscapes intertwine over four longform pieces, which foreground the tactility of full-spectrum immersive soundwork. Tom White utilises tape manipulation, electromagnetic activity, field recording, electronic processing and elements of musique concréte in this assemblage of recent material.

‘Medina Vibrations’ (2020)

A couple of months before lockdown, the housing block where Tom White lived got covered in scaffolding. Residents were left in a building veiled by translucent white netting for months on end. This composition was made in this specific urban lockdown context: the fridge whirs, birds chirp on scaffold poles, electromagnetic activity & tape loops reverberate on the eardrums, within the home and out into the world. Composed of archive and site specific sounds, spring 2020. Medina Vibrations was originally commissioned for the exhibition ‘Now Accepting Contactless - Design in a Global Pandemic’ V&A Dundee as part of a mix by David Blamey for British Earways and played on a loop in the gallery.

‘Energiser’ (2022)

Energiser is driven by the tension between “natural” and synthetic sound and our perception of which is altered by what is presented sonically. Consisting of field recordings and electronics, Energiser attempts to propose a dialogue between contrasting sound worlds, suggesting the correlation between them is blurred. Whilst attempting to record natural sounds, inevitably man-made interferences and disruptions will no doubt affect the direction of a recording, this almost certainly dictates decision making during a recording rather than a continued pursuit of a perfect natural sound recording. Here we have an electric fence that surrounds a pheasant enclosure; a metal tube being dipped in and out of a body of water; a parabolic dish used as percussion instrument; dead flowers closely recorded, digitally manipulated and further treatment of open reel tape manipulation.
Originally included in the installation, WARM SPELL, abC Book Fair, Beijing. Curated by Continuous Tone 2022.

‘Hooligan’ (2020)

This short form electroacoustic work made with electronics, tape manipulation and voice memo field recordings is an exercise in tension and at times restraint. Exploring purely atmospheric, cinematic dynamics from rumbling low frequencies and feedback counteracted with the absurdity of the inebriated football fan shouting, threatens to spiral out of control but eventually ends in relative calmness.

‘Pebbledash Piece’ (Live at TACO! Gallery) (2019)

In response to Laura Yuile’s installation consisting of a room of pebbledashed TVs, Pebbledash Piece was a performance passing gravel between two speaker cones; each playing varying sine waves. With the removal of gravel from one speaker, a swinging suspended microphone reveals more of the tone with each motion. The performance transitions into tape manipulation concréte-collage and ends with the sound of small electric motors suspended from mic stands waving plastic packaging and rolling across the gallery floor into the path of the audience. Recorded November 24th 2019 for Constructions #3 curated by Kate Carr and Matt Jenner.
